Leadership Seeing the Might Oak in the Acorn Most of us have recurring issues or situations that we would love to finally resolve. They may be work issues or difficulties in our personal relationships. Unfortunately, we often give up on trying to solve these issues, convinced we just can't win. Or, we waste time and energy applying the same old ineffectual remedies that have failed us so many times before, hoping this time things will be different. Instead, we should heed the wisdom of Albert Einstein, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". If you truly want to resolve recurring problems once and for all, you must find ways to shift your paradigm. What’s a paradigm? It's the rules that you’ve set up subconsciously for dealing with issues. But these rules that are meant to help us often become boundaries that hinder us. So to solve the unsolvable, you must change these boundaries. Only then can you see the seeds for the solution – what Dr. Tojo Thatchenkery calls the ability to see "the Mighty Oak in the acorn". But what does it take to join the ranks of successful people who seize that opportunity and turn their ideas into reality? In his most recent book, Appreciative Intelligence, Dr. Thatchenkery sheds some powerful light on how you can achieve the same results in your life. According to Dr. Thatchenkery,a professor of organizational learning at the School of Public Policy,George Mason University, Appreciative Intelligence is: "The ability to see what's possible and then make it happen... "Appreciative Intelligence is the ability to perceive the positive inherent generative potential in a given situation and to act purposively to transform the potential to outcomes." In other words, it is the ability to reframe a given situation to recognize the positive possibilities embedded in it but not apparent to the untrained eye, and to engage in the necessary actions so that the desired outcomes unfold. The first step in developing your Appreciative Intelligence is to develop the ability to see 'the mighty oak in the acorn'. Once you do, you have the power to make a significant difference in your life or any organization -- profit, nonprofit, or local governments. The second step is to engage in action that is purposeful, that can transform your current situation, so that you can take the positive outcomes you see and act on them.
