Over the past decade the use of sealant to help protect teeth has become more and more commonplace. Sealants are used to coat areas of your teeth that are vulnerable or most susceptible to decay and cavities. Sealants are especially useful for children where teeth are still developing and decay hasn't become a problem yet.
A sealant is a coating that is placed on chewing surfaces, particularly molars and hard to reach crevasse, pits and groves in your teeth. Sealants are usually applied in one visit and can be effective for several years. Once your teeth are cleaned and polished, an abrasive etch is place on the tooth for the sealant to settle on. The sealant is then dried using a special light.
Sealants have proven highly effective at preventing cavities in hard to reach places where brushing may miss from time to time. The coating that sealants provide has even shown success in preventing further damage in teeth where decay is already evident.
Ask us about sealants for your teeth as well as your children's teeth during your next visit.
