Back to School!
September is a busy month filled with excitement and changes. New jobs and projects, new schools, new activities, new opportunities! This month also hosts the Terry Fox Run with events across Canada raising money for cancer research, as well as World Heart Day.

September 22 is the first day of autumn, a favourite season among many in our office. Soon the leaves will change colour and our warmer clothes will make their way to the front of our closets. We will also have the opportunity to partake in the many activities that present themselves this time of year. These include nature hikes, indoor sporting leagues, and a family favourite, apple picking. If you are in the Toronto area during the evening of October 4th plan to explore the contemporary art exhibits of 'nuit blanche'.

Speaking of 'Back to School', Jasmine has enrolled in Hygiene School in pursuit of her goal of becoming a Hygienist. The team at High Park Dental Care will miss her and would like to wish her all the best! We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Sherry to High Park Dental Care. She is a warm and caring addition to our office and is already proving to be a valuable member of the team.

If you have enrolled yourself or your children in a sporting league this season, we strongly recommend speaking to us about protecting your teeth. A properly fitted mouthguard will add a level of safety that over the counter alternatives may not provide.

A common problem that patients complain about is sensitive teeth. One of the avoidable causes of sensitive teeth that is truly 'in your hands' is aggressive brushing.
	Many people are under the misconception that brushing harder with a firm bristled tooth brush will better clean their teeth. This, coupled with an improper brushing technique (using a back and forth or scrubbing motion) can damage enamel, exposing dentin and resulting in tooth sensitivity.

Mouthguards are flexible dental appliances worn by athletes to protect teeth from possible damage. They are usually made of plastic materials that fit comfortably over your teeth and gums. There are over the counter variations available, but for the highest level of protection we recommend a custom fitted mouthguard that is made specifically for your smile.
Mouthguards prevent major injuries including concussions, jaw fractures, neck injuries and more by protecting the lower jaw from impacting into the upper jaw. Mouthguards also prevent bruising and laceration of the lips and cheeks. Whenever there is a possibility of contact either with other competitors or any immovable objects we highly recommend the use of a mouthguard.
Many schools and sports leagues require the wearing of mouthguards during both practice and actual competition. Even if this is not mandatory, mouthguards should be worn during active involvement in sports. Parents in particular should ensure that children, who may not be aware of or fully understand the potential dangers, protect their winning smiles through the use of mouthguards.
