Believe it or not Halloween is here!
The ghosts and goblins around the office are getting restless as I'm sure the ones around your home are as well. Please remember to take a little extra care if you're on the roads this Halloween.

Halloween signals the coming of the holiday season and then the new year quickly thereafter. Did you know that many dental plans are based on the calendar year? If you need to visit us for a cleaning, now is the time! We've made it easy for you to request an appointment from the computer your sitting at right now by simply clicking here.

Here are some 'around the home' reminders for this time of year. Remember to change your clocks back an hour this November 4th and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors on the same day...it's a great way to remember this important task. If your furnace has a duct system that you need to open, do it before you turn on the heat. If your garden hose is still out, empty the water wind it up and turn off the outdoor water valves. If I'm missing anything let me know!

In this issue I wanted to offer you some tips that may be of use around this holiday as well as tell you a bit more about a commonly used dental restoration called a crown. As always, we love to hear from you with suggestion for our newsletter and ways to make your experience with us the best it can be.

Wishing you countless reasons to Smile,

Dr. Freedman and the Team at BDHC

Ah it's October, the leaves are falling and so are the temperatures. Halloween is just around the corner and whether you have little ghosts and goblins or not, chances are you will have a pail full of sugary sweets to accommodate those that do come to your door.

If you're like me, not all of these candies end up in little 'trick or treaters' bags. More often than not it's a 1:1 ratio of one in the bag, one in my stomach.

Here are some suggestions to help you cope with the temptation of Halloween candy in the house.

For starters, wait until the night or two before Halloween to actually pick up any candy...if its not there, you won't eat it.

Eat any candy with a meal, and drink water to rinse the sugar from your teeth when you're done.

Buy yourself a treat, this year I'm trying an imported dark chocolate instead of the countless candies intended for the ghouls.

If you're going to indulge, do so in moderation, besides the dental problems think about your overall health.

There you are watching a movie, innocently eating your popcorn… Crack! Ouch!

Uh oh! Was that your tooth?

Time to call the dentist!

What is a Crown?
A crown is a covering that sits over the top of the tooth. Crowns protect, cover, seal and strengthen your tooth. When a filling can't do the job properly, a crown is the best option.

There are many situations that may call for a crown:

When large old fillings break down, or get decay around them, the tooth often needs to be crowned. It is important to crown a tooth that has been structurally weakened to prevent further damage such as cracking or breaking.

When a tooth is cracked, a crown is placed over the tooth to hold it together. If this is not done on time, the tooth can become sensitive or will eventually break. It is important to crown a cracked tooth before it breaks as broken teeth are not always repairable.
