Upon its creation over two thousand years ago, the ketubah was intended to be a purely legal document that spelled out the rights of the bride and the obligations of the groom. For its time, the ketubah was an extraordinarily progressive document as it provided women with legal status and rights within their marriage.

Today, the ketubah retains its status as a legal document; however, it also has become a method through which couples can exchange their vows and hopes for the future.  In fact, many couples are free to select or write their own text – one that reflects their unique relationship and everlasting love.  Others choose traditional wording – wording that has remained the same for over 2000 years.
